Leadership and Teamwork

Task 1
Authoritarian is a style of leadership that is a very direct. This is to enable a decision or idea
made fast and immediately. A leader that uses the authoritarian style tends to be extremely
strict and will have full control of the team along with what is achieved or not. The team has
little input to the ideas that the leader has came up with. The team is expected to follow the
orders that the leader has made without arguing. The reason for this is the group will get
any tasks done a lot faster.

A situation where this leadership style could be used is just before going into the war zone.
A leader of the unit in the army has to deliver the orders to the group quickly and fast. The
leader would use authoritarian as he/she would want to get the orders said instantly as
there is no time for the leader to take everyone’s idea for the plans, this is because having a
big discussion for the orders will waste crustal time and in this certain situation they can not
afford to do so.
This leadership style allows everyone in the team to get involved by saying what they think
and their opinions, after ideas are said the leader will make the final decision on what to do.
Every team members opinion is valued which encourages others to input their thoughts and
feelings to the leader as well. After a while of everyone putting their ideas forwards, all
decisions will be made collectively. The leader will decided which ones can be used and
which ones are not likely to be used.

This leadership style can be used in the swat team entering a building to secure a hostage.
The swat team would have to decide all together about a plan on how they are going to
enter the building etc. This is a good leadership as everyone gets to put their opinion in and
all the ideas will be used to come out with an effective idea to achieve the mission.
=
Laissez-faire is a style where the leader normally takes a step back and doesn’t have all the
responsibility on them. The leader will give out the certain roles and orders for the
individuals then allow them to carry out job with no more help by the leader. All the team
members have responsivities to get the task done by themselves. This gives the freedom for
the team to do it their way. Members are motivated to succeed in the jobs they have been
set.
This can be used in the police force when dealing with any kind of murder. The leader of the
unit will give out the certain roles for all of the individuals that will do best in. After this the
leader will take a step back and allow the other members to do what they have to do when
investigating the murder scene. This allows things to get done quicker as the team is more
effective.
Transactional leadership is a style where the leader motivates their team by giving rewards
at the end of the job. The leader can also punish members who don’t do their jobs correctly.
The leader of this group uses the rewards to motivate the members to drive to succeed in
their areas and improve all the time. The punishments are there to immediate the
individuals not to fail. A leader that uses this style wants to make sure everyone knows what
they want.
This leadership style can be used in any public services when training recruits to be the best.
In the royal marines when they are training them up they can give clear instructions of what
they want them to do within a time or score. The individuals will be motivated to succeed as
the reward of completing the training tests would be letting them stay in but for a
punishment for them not completing within the time they can be kick out or have to do a
number of push ups/ sit ups.
Transactional leadership style is used to create a vision for individuals. This style sets long
term goals rather then short term achievements. The leader motivates the members to
drive to success in their roles. The team will work together to get to the end goal of
achieving the set goal. This type of leader will say what he/she wants to happen and will try
to inspire the team to do so. The leader will listen to their team members to do
improvements. This is done by communicating to everyone.
In the police force they can use transformational leadership style to motivate the officers to
do their job properly. In the police the long term aim is to stop or prevent all crime from
happening. This can inspire the officers who are patrolling in their areas to succeed this goal.
The people in the higher ranks have created a vision of having nothing but peace in the
world. This would motivate the officers the do their job.
Bureaucratic is a leadership style that can make jobs be done a lot faster if done right. This
leadership style is normally used by leaders that are organised and are in the higher
positions. The leader relies on the rules to be followed by the people. This will keep the
group organised and always busy as everyone knows what they are doing and what has to
be completed.
A situation where bureaucratic would be used is in the fire service when getting called to a
fire. The fire fighters will have to follow a set amount of rules before getting to the screen
and then entering the burning building such as wearing the right clothing and having the
correct resources also making sure the perimeter is safe and not allowing anyone near the
house for safety.
This leadership style cares about improving the relationship between every member in the
group. The leader wants a positive working atmosphere for all team member so they feel
comfortable. The leader aims to help all the individuals on their skills in the roles they are in.
The leader wants each member to be able to help the team out for the better. Also the
leader wants a good relationship with their workers.
The public services would use this type of leadership all the time. In the air ambulance when
trying to rescue someone who is either injured or stuck on difficult terrain. The leader most
make sure everyone feels confident and safe when participating in the job as the job will be
achieved better.
This type of the leadership isn’t liked the most team members. This is because the leaders
main aim is achieving their task and doesn’t care much about the members in the team. The
leader will give out the roles that they want them individuals to do. This is to get the roles
told to the individuals told quickly without people complaining. The leader doesn’t listen to
the members in the team.
For an example of when this leadership style could be used is when an army medic has just
arrived on the scene. This is where the leader would give out instructions immediately and
roles for individuals to do. The other soldiers wont have any say but will have to follow the
instructions given out by the leader.
A leaders roles is having the responsibility of a group to lead them through a task or job to
achieve the end goal. The leader will need many different skills to be effective when leading
any type of groups.
AUTHORITARIAN
The individual who will use this leadership styles would be someone in the ranks of a
General or Lieutenant General in the army. The leader will take all the responsibilities if
anything goes wrong, delivering the orders and making sure everyone is doing their roles
properly and effectively. The certain skills that the leader needs when using this style is
having good communication to talk to the group, confidence to stand in front of everyone
and talk. The leader will have to be able to motivate the team so they drive to succeed.
Along with having good problem solving skills so the leader can adapt to any situation and
come up with effective plans to over come that certain problem.
DEMOCRATIC
The leader will have most responsibility but will collect all ideas from other members, a skill
that the leader will use, would be when listening to other members ideas. The leader most
respect everyone in the team so it encourages them to input their ideas to everyone. The
leader must be able to communicate to everyone and have to confidence to say what’s good
and what’s not when members are forwarding their ideas. This is hardly used in the public
services.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE
The officer who is leading the certain group doesn’t require a lot of skills as they aren’t
always contributing to the teams effort but allowing the members to do everything. They do
require a couple skills such as respecting all the team members and communicating to them
when asking them to do their jobs. The officers who are carrying out the task will have to
have the skills of being independent and confidence to have no guidance.
TRANSACTIONAL
A physical training leader in the royal marines will need to be able to talk to their group.
Also they need to adapt to situations They need to be able to motivate everyone to succeed.
They need to immediate the recruits so they don’t fail. You need the skill of independence
and confidence to lead a group.
TRANSFORMATIONAL
As someone high in the ranks in the police they’d need leadership skills for transformational
style. They would need to be able to communicate in every single way. They most be able to
motivate the individuals who are patrolling to try give it their 100% all the time to stop
crime. The leader most be able to create a clear vision for everyone. Also they’d need to
make sure they sound believable as they wont follow if they didn’t rust what they said.
BUREAUCRATIC
The skills the leader would need for this leadership style would be things such as, having the
skill of problem solving when getting to the screen of a fire. They should be able to adapt to
any situation and over come it. They need to be able to communicate to everyone in an
effective way. He should be able to motivate other fire fighter to succeed in the job. They
also need to have the confidence and bravery to enter the burning building. The leader
needs to make the team work together in an effective way.
PEOPLE ORIENTATED
In this certain leadership style the leader should have certain skills to be effective. The
leader should have full respect for everyone in the group. Also he should be good at
communicating to everyone when doing jobs. Along with being able to motivate people to
succeed in their roles. The leader should be approach with a positive attitude so no
individual in the group is scared to forward their feelings or ideas.
TASK ORIENTATED
A leader in the army that is using this certain leadership must be strict. They must always be
forced on the task set. He must communicate to the other soldiers around them. They also
must be able to adapt to all sort of different situation and solve it as soon as possible.
Task two
COMPARING THE DIFFERENT TYPER OF LEADERSHIP STYLE!!
All leadership’s style is used in different types of jobs to get the better outcome.
In a situation where a decision needs to be made quickly and effectively without individuals
complaining or wanting to change the plan such as in the army you get suddenly attack by a
group of taliban’s and need orders to be put out quickly, the leadership styles that should be
used are authoritarian and task orientated as they are very direct with little input by the
members in the group. A leadership style that wouldn’t be appropriate for this certain
situation would be laissez-faire as the leader takes a step back and allows the group to take
control which isn’t effective as this is a very different style compared to authoritarian etc.
A situation where the team members communicate to the leader about their ideas and
feelings to get an end result could be used in the army. The army could use this kind of
leadership style when planning missions. This is because the leader can’t make a plan all by
himself, as it may not be good enough and may end badly. The leader will listen to everyone
in the group and write down all the ideas give then out them all together to make a better
plan. This is a good style for this situation as every member’s idea is listened to which
encourages everyone to get involved. If you used laissez-faire for this situation it wouldn’t
really work as good as using democratic as the leader has less responsibility and the team
may not do the job correctly.
When rules are meant to be followed to make the job easier and faster the leadership style
you would use would be bureaucratic and Transactional. These leadership styles are very
effective when they are done correctively. A situation where you would use these two types
of styles would be when the fire service has been called out as there is a house on fire. The
fire fighters will have to follow certain rules before getting in the fire truck such as putting
all the right resources into the selected spaces. When the firemen get to the house they
have to follow another set of rules to reduce risks such as blocking off the perimeter so no
citizens can get through. A leadership style that wouldn’t really work in this situation would
be task orientated as the team needs to communicate to each other and not just to get
given a role with no guidance to do. Another leadership type that is quite similar to
bureaucratic would be people orientated because the leader cares about their group and
safety is key, they follow rules given out along with communicating to everyone in the
group. Even though they are quite similar people orientated style wouldn’t be that effective
as the leader may not complete the task if it is too dangerous as firefighters need to go into
dangerous situation to save people or put the fire out.
The public services use all these types of leadership styles in missions or just normal jobs
around the base. All leadership styles are effective in their own way as you cannot use all
the different types of leaderships in every situation as it wouldn’t be effective and may not
get the job done quickly.
Task three
Effectiveness of different leadership styles used in the public services!!
The public services use all these types of leadership styles in missions or just normal jobs
around the base. All leadership styles are effective in their own way as you cannot use all
the different types of leaderships in every situation as it wouldn’t be effective and may not
get the job done
Authoritarian
Overall I believe this is an effective leadership style as it is extremely direct which gets the
job done instantly without people complaining. This is very effective in dangerous situations.
The army would use this leadership style when being under attack as it is very effective
when orders are given out almost instantly which allows the soldiers to get organised and
overcome the problem. If democratic was used in this situation it would waste a lot of time
as everyone is saying their thoughts and this wouldn’t be effective in this situation which
may cost lives.
ADVANTAGES
The advantage of using this certain leadership style is all the decisions are made by the
leader which makes the process a lot faster. The leader will have full control which makes it
easier when delivering the plans to larger groups. Another reason why this style is good is
because everyone knows what their role is to do, which allows all the individuals to be
organised.
DISADVANTAGES
There are also a few disadvantages about using this leadership styles as well. As the leader
has full control of the team if anything goes wrong the leader will have to take the blame. As
the team members have little input they can stop listening, or even disagree with what the
leader is saying and may not follow the orders that have been set. Someone individuals can
be scared of the leader which may affect their performance when doing their role.
Democratic
Democratic is a very good leadership that can be very effective when the right leader is
using it. Democratic can be used for the swat team when raiding a building to gather
evidence or rescue civilians from being held hostage. This is effectively in the public services
as it allows everyone to get involved to come up with a better plan to overcome the
problems in that situation.
ADVANTAGES
In this leadership style there are many advantages of using it such as every team member is
more involved and feels valued when forwarding their ideas. All members are respected by
the leader which makes the team more effective. This may cause the respect for the leader
to improve as well. All the ideas said from the team members are used to make a more
effective and better decision in the end.
DISADVANTAGES
A democratic leadership style also has it disadvantages. This takes a lot of time to come up
with a decision which can sometimes not be effective in the public services as jobs are
normally done fast and quickly. Hardly used when decisions are needed instantly. Not
appropriate for short term issues etc. in the public services.
Laissez Faire
In my opinion I do think that this is an effective leadership in the right job. This is effective
because it allows the team to work together and do things how they like to do it which
makes them feel more comfortable when doing the role. This can contribute to the
effectiveness in public services when a unit is investigating a murder scene, because the
leader will give out a few orders but the individual in the team will take control and do what
they need to do. A leadership style that wouldn’t be suitable would be bureaucratic as it’s
not flexible all the time which may cause the job to take longer then normal.
ADVANTAGES
This leadership style allows the leader to take a step back without all the responsibility being
on them. This will motivate the team members to perform better as they want to prove they
are able to do their roles without be bossed about. All members in the team feel valued and
important. This can make tasks be done faster and better.
DISADVANTAGES
In this style the leader doesn’t get a lot of control over the team members in the group.
Some team members may find it quite hard to do their role as the leader hasn’t said what to
do. The leader may feel like he doesn’t have control at all with the group and isn’t helping
anyone out. This may cause him/she to get annoyed.
Transactional
This can be used in different types of jobs to get the job done smoother. This is an effective
as the team can always motivated to get the end reward. This is effective when training the
recruits as all the recruits want to succeed through the training stage to become a soldier
etc. Recruits would set myself short term goals to pass through all the test or the
punishment is them getting kicked out. This will motivate everyone to do the best.
ADVANTAGES
This have some good advantages when using it in groups as all members are motivated and
ready to go. The orders are given out very clearly as all the members are listening. Also the
leader can watch what everyone is doing and observes individuals progression and what
areas that certain individual needs to improve on.
DISADVANTAGES
Some disadvantages about this leadership style is that team members could find it hard to
do the tasks as they might not know what to do or have no knowledge about it. The leader
will not help out the group. Team members might get bored of the job and not do it too
their best ability but are only motivated by the reward at the end such as money.
Transformational
In certain situations or jobs this leadership style can sometimes be effective in its own way. I
believe this is an effective as the leader is determined to motivate his employers and will
make them imagine a vision of their work in the future. This leader will inspire individuals to
develop their team together and drive to succeed the end goal. In the public service
especially the police force this can be effective as the officers will be motivated to spot all
kind of crime and create peace.
ADVANTAGES
There are a couple of advantages using this leadership style. One is that was aims to create
a vision for the workers. The leader sets long term goals which are expected to be
completed. The leader inspires the members to work harder.
DISADVANTAGES
This takes a long time for goals to be achieved. Some leaders don’t know everything about
the different jobs such as details. The members don’t always trust the leaders on what they
say are actually to truth and not a lie. Team members don’t always work up to standards
and can be put off the job. Team members can get tired of the leader and not listen.
Bureaucratic
This leadership is very good when used in the correct situation. This can be effective when
the team follows the orders. This leadership styles allows the team to follow rules to reduce
the risk of injuries etc. The fire service can use this style when going to tricky or dangerous
jobs such as being called to a car crash scene. This is effective as the firemen know what to
follow when arriving onto the scene to getting the job done quickly and reduce the risk
which is extremely effective in the public services.
ADVANTAGES
This style of leadership is very good as members obey the rules of conduct in the certain
area they are working in. By following the rules risk are reduced all the time. Effective in
dangerous jobs.
DISADVANTAGES
This type of leadership style can tend not to be very flexible as rules have to be followed.
Rules can be broken to have a better outcome. Individuals may not follow the rules set
making the job not as effective
People Orientated
This is an effective leadership is all sort of jobs in the public services. For an example when
this leadership is effective as the leader cares about all of his troops and wants them to feel
safe. In a dangerous situation such as a long lasting fire fight, the leader will make sure
there’s a positive atmosphere around everyone to make them want to carrying on fighting
back.
ADVANTAGES
This leadership style cares about all the members in the group. The team will respect the
leader as the leader will respect them in return. The leader will make sure the there is a
positive attitude will everyone in the group. When the leader is out on a task with his/hers
group, he/she will want to know if everyone feels safe at all times.
DISADVANTAGES
There are also some disadvantages in this style. As the leader wants to improve individuals
skills it takes longer to do which requires a lot of time. Some tasks might not be completed
as the leader cares too much about their team members. Safety is key which may take
longer to do jobs as they are looking at all the possible risks.
Task Orientated
I believe that this is an effective leadership style as it gets all the jobs/ tasks done as soon as
possible as everyone in the group knows what to do in their roles. This would be effective in
the paramedic force. This is because they can give out roles instantly when arriving on the
scene which will get everyone organised straight away and allow them to get on with
whatever they have to do. A leadership role that wouldn’t be suitable for the paramedics
would be transformational as this leadership role is more about long term goals and not
short which paramedics need.
ADVANTAGES
In this leadership style all tasks are done quickly. The entire tasks are organised and the
rules are clearly given out to the team members on how to do the task etc. The tasks are
done smoothly. Not a lot of issues.
DISADVANTAGES
Members in the team can feel like they are getting ignored from the others. This leadership
style doesn’t encourage the individuals to forward what they think. Some may lack in
motivation to succeed. Isn’t very good when in dangerous situations if individuals are
thinking about the task too much which may put lives at risk.
